Being very deeply inspired by the clarion call of Swami Vivekananda to serve the Nation, Revered Swami Prabhananandaji (Ketaki Maharaj) started his pioneering philanthropic activities in 1924 among the Khasi tribal people of Shella (50 km away from Sohra) to materialise the Great Swamiji’s Version “Let new India arise… from groves and forests, hills and mountains” and started basic educational services among the underprivileged, uneducated tribal and poor people of that locality. With a motherly heart, he undertook the hardship for setting up as many as 11 schools in those days of difficulties! After starting a Primary School at Shella (1924) and Nongwar (1928) he started another Primary School at Maraikaphon in Sohra (Cherrapunjee) also in 1931 wherefrom it was shifted to its present site at Khliehshnong (Sohra) in 1933. The school being formally recognized by the Directorate of Education in 1938, the first batch of students appeared in the Matriculation Examination under the University of Calcutta in 1939 when it happened to be the second High School in the entire Khasi Hills next only to Shillong. Being pressed by the increasing number of students every year and also having repeated requests from the parents and guardians of the students, the school was upgraded to the H.S. level in 1994 and since then it has been producing a galaxy of gifted and educated good citizens of India who leave appreciable mark and impact in the society.
This Ramakrishna Mission Higher Secondary School at Sohra is an institution that fosters and strengthens the spirit of harmony, tolerance and national integrity. Man-making and character-building are our principal purposes in the field of education. Various moral values like truthfulness, honesty, sincerity, love for the country, confidence and other noble ideas and ideals are generally infused and fostered in the minds of all students who come to our institution for general education.
Aims and Performance:
Aiming at imparting man-making and character-building education as propounded by Swami Vivekananda, this institution has been relentlessly looking after the all-round development of its students in academic as well as co-curricular activities over the years. Since many students are hailing from poor families, most of them are provided with school uniforms, textbooks, exercise books and other study materials free of cost.
Several students have also been provided with scholarships and pecuniary support helping them attend the school for education without imposing any financial hardships on their parents. Guardians are also encouraged to take active part in educating their children for all-round progress and unfolding their hidden possibilities. This institution has drawn ready attention of many students, guardians as well as academicians from all over the North Eastern region and is noted for producing many distinguished persons in various walks of life from among its ex-students.
Co-curricular Activities:
Students are encouraged to take an active part in essay writing, drawing, debate, elocution, quiz competitions, drama, recitation, and other allied competitions. These co-curricular activities are organised regularly in order to unfold the hidden talents of our students.
Sports activities like race, athletics, and many indoor games, viz. chess, minefield, etc. are conducted annually. Our students are encouraged to participate in the different seminars, workshops, exhibitions, and cultural competitions organised by various institutions where students have always exhibited their skills.
In order to infuse special interest and love for modern science and technology into the receptive minds of students, science exhibition is often organised in which many students of this institution participate actively by making models, charts, etc. Aiming at developing the spirit of fraternity and a sense of patriotic feeling in the minds of the students, the school has its separate NCC wings for boys and girls under the guidance of trained teachers. A good number of students took part in the NCC and brought laurels to the institution by participating in NCC camps.
The school sends its students on excursions to different places located within Meghalaya as and when possible so as to enable them to be familiar with the different traditions of the society and the area as a whole. The students are made aware of the vastness and rich traditions of our country, culture, and people. Each and every national occasion like Independence Day, Republic Day, etc. is celebrated with due importance, enthusiasm, and fervour.
The school has been maintaining its bus service over the years which is of great help to the students without which it would have been difficult for many students to attend the school. The institution has been rendering this service with financial assistance from the Ministry of Tribal Affairs Govt. of India.

Ramakrishna Mission LP School Jatap was initially set up at Khamalai village, East Khasi Hills District, Meghalaya, on the land of Shri Gregory Chyne. Late, in the year 2003, the land owner Shri Gregory Chyne requested Secretary Maharaj Swami Devemayananda to vacate the land as he was in need of the same for some of his personal use.
Then, Swami Devamayananda Maharaj started searching for land to shift the School to a nearby village. A gentleman came to know that Swami Devamayananda Maharaj was in search of land for shifting the R.K.Mission LP School from Khamalai to some other village. He went to meet Swami Devamayanada Maharaj personally in his Ashrama. Kalatek village is situated near the border of Bangladesh. All the inhabitants of this village were illiterate. A few villagers decided to establish a school for their children and made a school building. The school was made of bamboo and straw Teachers were also appointed by the people of the village. The teachers’ salaries and other expenses were arranged by the villagers. The school remained functional for many years. Then the villagers requested the Secretary, Ramakrishna Mission Ashrama, Cherrapunjee to take over the school. In 1983 this school was taken over by Ramakrishna Mission Ashrama, Cherrapunjee.
Annual Sports, cultural programmes, and educational excursions are held every year.
ANNEXURE 7: PROPOSED UPGRADATION OF LP SCHOOL AT KALATEK TO A SECONDARY SCHOOL
The Border fencing between India and Bangladesh runs behind this school. In fact, our school is located after the BSF outpost. The rate of illiteracy was very high in this area. Some progressive people took the initiative to start a school They approached the mainland Khasi community whose land they tilled for livelihood and the government in vain. Ultimately they approached Ramakrishna Mission Ashrama, Cherrapunjee, and the school was taken over in 1983. The roll strength this year is 315 (154 girls and 161 boys). The school cannot cater to this strength, so it is functioning in two shifts.
The estimate for the school is prepared based on minimum requirements insisted by the Meghalaya Board of School Education (MBOSE). The fulfillment of the requirements is a must for the school to be ‘Recognized’ by the Department of Education as this is a mandatory condition to apply for Affiliation with the MBOSE. All constructions are of RCC structured buildings with normal specifications of PWD / CPCWD schedule and designed as per national building code unless specified otherwise. Estimates are prepared as per the Meghalaya Public Works Department (Building) SCHEDULE OF RATE 2015-16 based on plinth-level calculations. The minimum total cost to construct a new Secondary School will be Rs. 135,29,000/
