"For one's own salvation and for the welfare of the world"
Inspired by the prophetic messages of the great Swami Vivekananda a young and energetic monk of the Ramakrishna Order, Swami Prabhananda (Ketaki Maharaj) stepped into Shella village at the southern slope of Khasi Hills in 1924 from the adjacent plains of Sylhet district to see how he could serve the Khasi people and save their cultural heritage from the clutches of foreign forces under the then British Rule. For his sincerity, genuine affection and devotion to the cause of Khasi people he was readily accepted by them. With ready cooperation from the villagers he started a small Primary School as well as a Health Centre just within a few days. In this way Shella village became the taproot of the humble beginning of the mighty services by Ramakrishna Mission in the field of Tribal Welfare as early in 1924.
Ramakrishna Mission is trying to serve the Nation through its 174 branch centres in different fields of the society, particularly among the underprivileged and tribal people, with a spirit of Shiva Jnane Jiva Seva (Service to man is service to God) as taught by Swami Vivekananda.
Ramakrishna Mission Ashrama, Sohra (Cherrapunjee) is one of the shining examples which has been trying to give a practical shape of Swamiji’s Ideals in the challenging and extreme climate of Sohra.
This Mission Centre has been unabatedly carrying welfare service activities during its long journey over eight decades and at present it has become like a huge banyan tree in the whole of the North Eastern Region. Presently the Ashrama is running 14 LP, 13 UP, 16 Sec and 7 Higher Secondary Schools, with about thousands of tribal students located all over the State of Meghalaya.
Ramakrishna Mission Sohra recently celebrated its 100th anniversary, marking a significant milestone in its journey of selfless service and spiritual elevation. The mission's journey began in 1924, guided by the principles of Sri Ramakrishna and Swami Vivekananda.
The centenary celebration was a momentous occasion, marked by shared values and purpose. We express our heartfelt gratitude to all who have supported the mission's journey through this incredible century.
